About the job

Job description

About Acas

We are Acas, an independent public body that provides advice and guidance on all aspects of employment law and workplace relations. We support good relationships between employers and employees which underpin business success. And when things go wrong, we help to resolve disputes whether there’s one person involved, or many.

Do you have what we’re looking for?

We’re looking for people with great communication skills who can influence, build rapport, and adapt their approach to suit different audiences. You will need to be organised, good at problem solving, and work well with others.

If you’ve got a background in HR, employment law or mediation then we’d love to hear from you. We offer full training however, so we also welcome applications from those without prior experience in these areas.

The role:

Our conciliation officers help to resolve workplace disputes, and this role involves dealing with all kinds of cases including more complex issues, for example discrimination or dismissal. We don’t take sides, but instead work with both parties (for example, an employer and employee) to help them to find a way to resolve their issues before it reaches an Employment Tribunal.

Conciliation is conducted mainly by telephone, with face to face contact when it is appropriate, and involves discussing the case, the relevant employment law, influencing and negotiating with parties with the aim of resolving the dispute.

It is an interesting and challenging role which requires individuals to work on their own initiative and take responsibility for managing their own workload.

Key qualities:

• Self-starters - able to work without close supervision and proactively manage a large and varied caseload

• Confident and effective communicators who can effectively influence using clear, concise and appropriate language and have the ability to explain often complex concepts to people whose knowledge varies from legal expert to an unrepresented party with little or no employment law knowledge.

• Able to build rapport with all parties whilst remaining impartial

• Problem solvers with good analytical skills- able to deal effectively with oral and written information, identifying the key points and strengths and weaknesses of a case and assisting both sides in a dispute to achieve a resolution.

• Able to work collaboratively and co-operate with colleagues from other teams in order to provide a high quality service to customers and to meet organisational objectives.

• Conscious of the wider remit of Acas, encouraging the improvement of employment relations, promoting Acas Advice and Guidance to help employers understand employment legislation and raising awareness of how best practice can improve business performance.

We'll assess you against these competencies during the selection process:

  • Delivering at pace
  • Making effective decisions
  • Acas Competency - Dispute Resolution/Promoting Good Employment Practice
  • Leading and communicating

Civil Service Competency Framework

What can we offer you?

  • Pensions
  • Full on the job training – prior experience is welcomed but not essential. Our staff come from a wide ranging background including retail, contact centres, HR and education
  • 33 days holiday (including bank holidays and privilege day) rising to 38 days (including bank holidays and privilege day) after 5 years’ service
  • Competitive salary, Civil Service pension and Reward & Recognition scheme
  • Flexible working, family friendly policies
  • For existing Civil Servants – continuity of service is maintained
  • Childcare vouchers
  •  Interest free season ticket loans (after 12 months’ satisfactory service)
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Interest free season ticket loans (after 12 months’ satisfactory service)

The closing date for applications is 12:00 mid-day on Mon, 9th July 2018.
