Chair to the Police Advisory Board for England and Wales (PABEW).

Location: The quarterly Board meetings will be held in London, with occasional travel to other regions on Board business

Remuneration: £437 per day, along with reasonable reimbursement for travel expenses

Time commitment: Approximately 21 days per year

Do you want to play a leading role in chairing a body whose work significantly impacts on all police officers in England and Wales?

The PABEW was established as a non-departmental public body under section 46 of the Police Act 1964, now section 63 of the Police Act 1996.  Under the remit of the Board, sits the Police Pensions Scheme Advisory Board and the Discipline Sub-Committee.  In addition to this, the Chair has responsibility of chairing the Police Consultative Forum (PCF), a voluntary forum for employer and staff representative bodies that sits outside the statutory functions of the PABEW.

We are seeking a new Chair to lead the organisation forward in a time of considerable change for policing. The Government has committed to considerable investment in the police workforce over the coming three years as part of the Police Uplift Programme which will increase officer numbers by 20,000, the biggest police recruitment drive in decades.

As PABEW Chair, there is the opportunity to be involved in this exciting and crucial area, steering the Board to engage with police leaders and staff association representatives to resolve a variety of vital policing matters. You will be chairing to respond to general questions from the Home Secretary about changes to police working practices and have the opportunity to shape important police pension scheme changes through the Scheme Advisory Board.

The Home Secretary is seeking to appoint a Chair who possesses leadership skills, good understanding of the role of representative bodies, and political awareness necessary to effectively guide a diverse Board. It is essential you have a broad knowledge and understanding of general workforce policy and remuneration issues, and the ability to communicate, influence and engage effectively. The Chair will strive to make decision by reaching consensus, taking into account conflicting views, while remaining independent. The Chair position is a rare opportunity to lead a body whose work impacts on all police officers in England and Wales.
