Overview

East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) was formed July 1, 2006, with the merger of ambulance services covering Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, East Anglia and Essex.

EEAST have a bold vision to ensure that the people of the East of England region are provided with excellent emergency and urgent care from a dedicated team of nearly 5,000 staff and 1,500 volunteers. Their overarching aim is to place patients and staff at the heart of everything they do while delivering their vision of ‘outstanding care, exceptional people, every hour of every day. The vision is supported by their organisational goals:

  • Be an exceptional place to work, volunteer and learn
  • Provide outstanding quality of care and performance
  • Be excellent collaborators and innovators as system partners
  • Be an environmentally and financially sustainable organisation

However, EEAST has some major problems they need to tackle in order to achieve these aims, particularly in delivering a systematic change in organisational culture, developing and creating new partnerships with communities and stakeholders, whilst strengthening performance and quality – all areas which the new Executive will drive forward.

This is a real opportunity for innovative thinking and strategic leadership which could be an exemplar to the rest of the UK’s ambulance trusts.

The role

As a member of Board, you will share collective responsibility and accountability for delivering on commitments for a safe place to work and a safe place for patients.

The role of the Director of People Services is a pivotal one within the Trust. The post holder is a member of the Executive Team and acts as the principal adviser to the Chair, Chief Executive, Board of Directors and organisation on all aspects of People Services, ensuring the Trust benefits from high quality, progressive people and HR practices. The post holder is responsible for interpreting guidance and advising Board directors on appropriate action and conduct. You will ensure that the Trust operates in accordance with statutory and legal provisions and in keeping with expectations of high-performing organisations. The successful candidate will operate to the highest standards of openness and transparency and with commitment to a culture of continuous improvement and learning.

The overarching priority for this role is to improve the working lives of everyone at EEAST.

To be successful in this post you will be a senior HR professional with accountability for the development, delivery and execution of an “Our People” Strategy which underpins and supports the overall Trust Strategy and synergises with other enabling strategies.

In particular, the successful candidate will be expected to initially focus on leading improvement across a range of core activities of the Trust including:

  • HR services teams and driving the improvement of these services including recruitment, payroll and related services.
  • lead on employee relations
  • lead on policy reform and union relationships
  • lead the development and implementation of an 'improved working lives' programme across the Trust to improve the in-work experience of our people - including how work is organised, rosters, policy reform etc.
