Job Details

Experienced HR Manager needed to provide HR support in an advisory capacity maintaining confidentiality and respect whilst adhering to policies, procedures and regulatory framework.

To support the strategic direction of the school in all people related matters.

Reporting to: Director of Finance & Operations

Accountable to: Director of Finance & Operations, Headteacher & Board of Trustees.

The HR Manager will work closely on a day - to - day basis with the HR & Finance Assistant.

Safeguarding: To be familiar with school policies, in particular safeguarding procedures, and promote the welfare of children.

Full time - Grade 9 Point 5 Salary £38,298 p/a

Based in Epsom, Surrey

Key accountabilities & Responsibilities:

General HR:

- Provide all-round generalist HR advice in accordance with employment legislation, determining when to escalate more complex issues for external advice and guidance.

- Provide advice and guidance on terms and conditions of employment e.g. leave, sickness, maternity, redundancy etc.

- Act as a point of contact for all staff for any employment related queries and/or advice and guidance as appropriate.

- To develop and deliver briefings and training to support the effective implementation of employment policies and procedures within the school e.g. training line managers on managing absence and / or conducting return to work interviews himself or herself etc..

- Relevant project and ad hoc work as directed.

Employee Relations/Casework:

- Lead on employee relation cases including disciplinary, capability, grievances, sickness review and welfare meetings, attendance management, probationary review and any other relevant meetings in accordance with the school's policies and procedures.

Policy, Process & Procedures

- Maintain and keep up to date the school's HR policies & procedures and HR systems and reporting, in line with regulatory compliance and employment law.

- Oversee and maintain the school's Single Central Register.

- Responsible for the school's Sponsor Management System, ensuring compliance with UKBA regulations, employment law and immigration checks on existing and future overseas employees.

Recruitment & On-boarding

- Manage the co-ordination and administration associated with the recruitment of support staff

- Supported by the HR & Finance Assistant, for all staff co-ordinate and administer vetting checks in line with Safer Recruitment guidelines, including obtaining references, enhanced disclosures checks, prohibitions checks, qualification checks, medicals etc. for all school staff, contractors, volunteers as required.

- To manage the on-boarding process for all new staff, including the timely and accurate production of offer letters and contracts of employment, and other supporting documentation, to support and co-ordinate the induction process.

- To implement and manage the full utilisation of the Apprenticeship Scheme, advising in the best deployment of the levy.


- To undertake any other duties commensurate with this post as directed.

- Understanding of a commitment to safeguarding, equality and diversity and health and safety and their applications in this role.

- To show solidarity by supporting school policy, and the Leadership team, publicly.

- Commitment to individual continuous professional development, wanting to 'get better' by building on strengths but also recognising development areas and actively seeking to improve them.

- To be in school from 8am each day and to be a focal point for colleagues returning to work following illness.

Person Specification

Education & Training

- Degree qualification, or equivalent, in HR & Employment Law and/or CIPD qualified or working towards achieving this qualification.

- Evidence of commitment to continuous professional development.

Relevant Experience

- Experience/education/training that clearly demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the scope of job duties of the position, including advising senior management.

- Experience of managing HR in a busy secondary school environment.

- Demonstrate evidence of substantial HR experience in a customer-facing environment.

- Experience and confidence in dealing with complex Employee Relations cases including disciplinary, capability, grievances, sickness review meetings, attendance management, probation review, and any other ER related matters

Knowledge & Skills

- An eye for detail, and ability to be consistently exacting.

- Demonstrate up to date knowledge of employment legislation and best practice.

- Knowledge of HR systems and their effective application.

- Ability to coach, develop and advise managers in all aspects of operational HR.

- Ability to offer rational, well informed pragmatic solutions to problems or issues.

- Excellent ICT skills are essential (including the ability to use a range of relevant software packages such as Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook, knowledge of the SIMS data base would also be an advantage)

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including attention to detail, and a high standard of grammar and the ability to check their own work for accuracy.

- Outstanding organisational skills and high professional standards are essential
