HEAD OF HUMAN RESOURCES

A part-time position to start from September/October 2022

An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an outstanding Human Resources professional to join Cumnor House Sussex, one of the country’s leading independent Prep, Pre-Prep and Nursery schools, rightly known for the warmth and strength of its community.

With the retirement of the current HR Manager, we are inviting applications from candidates with in-depth, all-round HR experience, management skills and an aptitude for the legal and compliance side of HR, as well as the recruitment and selection aspects.

Overarching responsibilities will be to provide an excellent service in running the HR operations of the school; and with the support of the Administration Assistant, to be responsible for overseeing all HR processes. Additionally, the Head of HR will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure the school is fully compliant with safer recruitment legislation.

Description of Role

Policy and Legal

• Advise on HR policy and manage HR matters by taking a proactive approach to ensure that the School fulfils its obligation to its employees.

• Provide SLT and line managers with advice on performance or absence management, disciplinary and grievance matters, termination of employment or redundancy.

• Keep abreast of all legislation relating to HR and ensure that the School is compliant.

• With the support of the Administration Assistant, ensure effective maintenance of records on staff working hours, sick leave, parental leave and absence, ensuring that line managers take appropriate action in line with agreed policies.

Recruitment, Compliance and Retention

• Manage the recruitment processes effectively and smoothly, ensuring timely recruitment of all staff to the School; make sure that job descriptions are accurate and roles are advertised appropriately.

• Manage the appointment and contract procedures, ensuring they are correctly carried out in line with legal and inspection requirements and School policies.

• Develop a thorough understanding of pre-employment and compliance checks specific to Schools, and ensure knowledge is up to date in this critical area, in line with ISI and other key regulations.

• Ensure the Single Central Register (SCR) is always up to date and inspection ready.

• Maintain compliance with GPDR and appropriate confidentiality in all aspects of HR.

• Work with the Deputy Head Pastoral on wellbeing for staff, updating resources and organising support for staff as required.

Training and Performance Management

• Ensure all staff complete mandatory Safeguarding and First Aid training and that accurate records are maintained.

• Assist the Head of Finance in the effective probation review, appraisal and induction of all support staff.

HR Finance and Payroll

• In liaison with the Head of Finance, manage the HR budget to finance recruitment and staff development.

• Advise SLT on appropriate salary levels, and help to ensure that pay practice across the school is applied fairly and consistently; make recommendations to improve practice where appropriate.

• Provide timely information on pension and pay to the payroll administrator, to ensure that all staff are paid correctly; make certain that any changes to staff roles or pay are properly communicated and documented, including advising staff of annual pay reviews.

• Gather and accurately set out information on upcoming changes to the workforce to allow annual salary budgets to be calculated by Head of Finance and assist in the production of forecasts.

General

• Help the SLT strengthen a collegiate working approach across the school.

• Ensure that the school, in its practices, complies with all current employment legislation.

• Regularly review all HR policies and procedures to ensure they are legally compliant, appropriate and in line with current best practice.

• Monitor sickness levels and manage absences across the school, taking action as appropriate.

Skills and Personal Qualities

Skills

• Excellent people management and communication skills, oral and written.

• Capable of multi-tasking under pressure and of establishing clear priorities.

• Able to manage issues clearly and logically to effective resolution.

• Possess a good understanding and experience of HR matters such as management practices, drafting policies and guidance, and HR information systems.

• Confident knowledge and experience of the practical application of employment law.

• Excellent ICT Skills.

• Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Personal characteristics

• Professional approach to work, combining integrity and respect for confidentiality at all times.

• Experience of working in HR.

• Ideally, the successful candidate will have experience of working in schools, but this is not essential.

Qualification

• Have achieved, or be working towards, CIPD Level 7, and will ideally be a graduate.

Terms and Conditions

• Salary will be discussed at interview and is expected to reflect the importance of the role and the experience of the candidate.

• Hours are from 8am to 5pm, over 40 weeks of the year, arranged and agreed with the Head of Finance to suit the work load.

• Flexibility and commitment is expected in order to fulfil the above responsibilities and meet the needs of the School.

• Attendance at meetings and events outside of normal working hours will be expected when requested.

• Annual leave should be taken in school holidays.
